Tafara Kakungwa, a devoted Manchester United fan from Epworth township, Zimbabwe, took his own life following his team’s crushing 7-0 defeat by Liverpool. The 24-year-old was so devastated by the loss that he hanged himself. Kakungwa, who worked as a vendor and was known for his betting activities, was an ardent supporter of Manchester United, so much so that he named his son after one of their players.
Kakungwa’s emotional attachment to the English Premiership club was so strong that he could not handle the historic drubbing of his team. After the game, he went outside without saying a word to anyone and committed suicide. His wife found his body hanging from a tree.
Investigations into his motive are still ongoing, and it is unclear whether his betting activities played a role in his tragic decision.
