The Progressive Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (PTUZ) also voiced their concern over the incident, with Raymond Majongwe, the Secretary-General of the organization, stating that the bullies must be held accountable for their actions.
Reporting the latest on the case, veteran journalist Ezra Tshisa Sibanda announced on Facebook that the boys have been arrested, writing;
Great news: Police have arrested three learners from Mathula High School in Tsholotsho District after they were filmed assaulting a female student. The police say the suspects aged 16 and 17, reportedly assaulted the victim after she had turned down a love proposal from one of the learners. ZRP national spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the arrests. He said one suspect is aged 17 and the other two suspects are aged 16.
According to Nyathi, the 3 thuggish boys ambushed the girl on her way home from school, proposed to her and were turned down. It didn’t go down well with them and they armed themselves and assaulted the young teenage girl in front of other learners. One of the learners recorded the incident which showed one of the suspects brandishing a machete, which police consider a dangerous weapon and should not be carried in public, added Asst Comm Nyathi. Police are warning students across the country against engaging in violent behaviour and acts of bullying which constitute criminality!
