Fatal Mistake: Young Man Beaten to Death in Kwekwe After Being Mistaken For a Thief

Police in Kwekwe are investigating a case of a young man who was beaten to  death after being mistaken for a thief. Sylvester Ncube(25) had visited his girlfriend in Mbizo suburb when he was thoroughly beaten after the lover failed to open the door.

Ncube was rushed to Kwekwe General Hospital but later succumbed to the injuries he sustained. According to Midlands Police Spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko, Ncube visited his girlfriend who stays in Mbizo, Kwekwe, but she didn’t respond to his knock at the door.

Beaten for being mistaken for a thief

After Sylvester’s girlfriend failed to open the door, he went to the neighboring house and knocked. The occupants, Philip Luthuli (22) and Prince Mafukidze, reportedly assaulted Ncube. They used a sjambok and an unknown object, suspecting Ncube was a thief. Days later, Ncube started complaining of pain on the ribs and disclosed the assault to his friend.

“He was taken to Kwekwe General Hospital where he was admitted. Ncube had succumbed to the injuries the following day,” Inspector Mahoko said.

Luthuli  and Mafukidze were arrested and are in police custody facing a murder charge, reported Chronicle.

Do not apply instant justice

Inspector Mahoko urged members of the public not to assault or apply instant justice to persons they arrest as suspects. It’s important to always report any criminal activity to the police instead of taking the law into your own hands. The incident serves as a reminder that mob justice not only violates the law but can also lead to tragic consequences.
