Tynwald High School Bus Driver Convicted on Seven Counts of Culpable Homicide

In a welcome development, Tynwald High School bus driver Chamunorwa Machimbidzofa has been found guilty of seven counts of culpable homicide. The conviction comes after a tragic accident in October last year when a school bus carrying 41 students and four teachers overturned near the Pine Tree Hotel on the Rusape-Nyanga Road. The accident claimed the lives of seven people, including six learners and one teacher.

Negligent Driving Led to Tragic Accident

Machimbidzofa was found to be responsible for the accident, as he was speeding and failed to negotiate a curve. According to eyewitnesses, the driver was speeding when he lost control of the bus, which veered off the road and landed in a gorge, killing and injuring the passengers.

Survivors Reveal Driver Ignored Warnings

Some of the students who survived the accident said the bus driver, Machimbidzofa Chamunorwa, ignored repeated pleas from the students and the teachers to slow down.

Driver Went into Hiding

The driver was arrested in November, almost three weeks after he went into hiding following the Nyanga bus accident. According to state media, Chamunowa was arrested in Harare after the police learned that he was going around expressing condolences to the parents of the deceased pupils through an intermediary. However, according to other reports, it is suspected that the Tynwald High School driver only surfaced after the school froze his salary.

Sentencing Pending for the Tynwald High School Bus Driver

According to H-Metro, Machimbidzofa is currently awaiting sentencing at the Nyanga Magistrates’ Court. The families of the victims have expressed relief at the conviction, hoping that it will serve as a warning to other negligent drivers and prevent future accidents.

Looking Ahead

This tragedy serves as a reminder of the importance of ensuring the safety of school transport. It is crucial for authorities to enforce strict regulations on school buses and drivers, to prevent such accidents from happening in the future. In the words of one education expert, “This tragedy should serve as a wake-up call for all involved in school transport. We must ensure that every child is transported to school and back home safely.”
