Truck driver’s carelessness results in two deadly accidents
A truck driver’s carelessness on the road led to two fatal accidents that claimed six lives and left multiple others injured. The first accident occurred on Sunday night along Mvuma-Gweru Road, where the truck side-swiped a Sprinter vehicle, killing six people and injuring five others.
Truck driver flees after first accident, causes second accident
Instead of stopping to assist the victims, the truck driver fled the scene, only to be involved in another accident at the 192 km peg along the Harare-Masvingo Road. According to national police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi, the truck veered off the road and injured three passengers who were in the truck.
In a statement, Assistant Commissioner Nyathi said,
“Police confirms a fatal road traffic accident in which six people died while five others were injured when a truck side swiped with a Sprinter vehicle at the 5 km peg along Mvuma-Gweru Road on Sunday at around 2300 hours.
“The bodies of the victims were taken to Mvuma Hospital for post mortem while the injured are admitted at the same hospital.
“The truck driver did not stop after the accident and was involved in another accident at the 192 km peg along the Harare–Masvingo Road where the truck veered off the road resulting in the injury of three passengers, who were in the truck,”
Separate accident claims two more lives
In a separate accident on the same night, a Honda Fit vehicle with four occupants on board veered off the road and landed beneath the bridge at the 213 km peg along the Harare-Masvingo Road. Two people died in the accident, and two others were injured.
Police urge drivers to exercise caution on the roads
Nyathi confirmed that the bodies of the victims were taken to Mvuma Hospital for post-mortem, while the injured were admitted to the same hospital.
“We urge drivers to exercise extreme caution on the roads and avoid reckless driving, which often results in fatal accidents,” he added.
