Urban Connect Accident Survivor Reveals Shocking Details of the Crash

Passenger’s Experience

He revealed that he boarded the Urban Connect bus at the Beitbridge border post, headed for Harare. The bus failed to depart on time, which frustrated the passengers and prompted them to confront the driver and his staff about the delay. After finally leaving the border, the driver began speeding, and when passengers complained, he would slow down to 20 km/h and further insult them with provocative language.

A Deadly Maneuver

However, the tension grew as the bus neared Masvingo Tollgate. About 200 meters from the tollgate, the driver attempted to overtake a vehicle. He did not check for oncoming traffic properly. This miscalculation led to a devastating collision with an Auro Transport haulage truck. Tragically, the accident claimed 24 lives.

Ministerial Response

Following the incident, Transport Minister Felix Mhona visited the accident scene. He was accompanied by Local Government Minister Daniel Garwe and Minister of State for Matabeleland South Evelyn Ndlovu. Mhona spoke to journalists about the shocking details uncovered during preliminary investigations. He revealed that the driver’s retest had expired in 2021. Additionally, the Urban Connect bus lacked a valid route permit.

Minister Mhona hinted that the government might impose a ban on Urban Connect. He stated that responsible authorities would take firm action. The Ministry of Transport’s official account on X echoed this sentiment.

“Mhona said the responsible authorities will take action to stop such carnage, emphasising that wayward driving, which does not respect the sanctity of life, will not be tolerated,” the post read.
