“I Was Trying To Impress A Girl” – Mutoko Man Who Lied About Losing US$287 000 Tells Magistrate As He Begs For Mercy
A Mutoko man who made a fake police report claiming that he lost US$287,000 at Copacabana begs for mercy from the magistrate, stating that he was just trying to impress a girl he wanted to date.
The Fake Police Report
Sibanda pleaded guilty to defeating the course of justice. He confessed to magistrate Sharon Rakafa that he lied to impress a girl he wanted to date. He pretended to be wealthy, hoping to win her affection. Sibanda stated that officers from CID Homicide overheard him and advised him to file a police report.

On December 4, he visited a police station in Mutoko. He falsely claimed that four robbers attacked him in Harare’s Central Business District near the Copacabana bus terminus. Sibanda alleged he was robbed while being driven in a Ford Ranger double cab.
A Web of Lies Unraveled
The police recorded his report under ZRP Mutoko CR 46/12/24. Sibanda claimed he had hired Safeguard Security Company to transport US$2.3 million from Matabeleland South to Harare for safekeeping. He stated he planned to buy residential and business properties in the capital.

However, detectives quickly discovered inconsistencies in his story. They visited the site where he claimed to have been dumped, but found no evidence. Further investigation revealed that Safeguard Security had no record of Sibanda as a client.
Detectives learned Sibanda had visited six Fawcett Security branches seeking cash-in-transit services. They established that he had no mining operations in Filabusi, contradicting his claims.
The Truth Comes to Light
Sibanda’s girlfriend, Agnes Mandiyenga, 23, provided additional details. She revealed they had been living together since November 2024, during which he only provided her with US$20 for household needs.
Court Sentence
Ultimately, the court sentenced Sibanda to twelve months in prison, with four months suspended. He must complete 208 hours of community service at Glen Norah Police Station.
