From Runners-Up to Premier League Glory: MWOS Snags Castle Lager Premier League Spot

MWOS will join the big boys in the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League this season after striking a deal to acquire the franchise of ZPC Hwange.

The club struck a franchise deal with ZPC Hwange, marking a significant milestone for the team. Last year, MWOS fell short in their quest for promotion. They finished as first runners-up in the Northern Region Soccer League, trailing behind winners Scottland FC.

After weeks of intense negotiations, MWOS successfully secured the franchise. The Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) Southern Region granted both sides the green light for the deal. This approval paves the way for MWOS to compete at the highest level of Zimbabwean football.

Negotiations between MWOS and ZPC Hwange began on December 12 of last year. ZPC Hwange faced financial challenges, making it difficult to support two clubs in the Premiership. The power company already manages ZPC Kariba, complicating matters further.

CAF Licensing Rule

Another hurdle was the CAF Club Licensing rule. This rule prohibits two clubs owned by the same company from competing in the same league due to conflict of interest. Despite these obstacles, ZPC workers committee attempted to keep Premiership football in the coal-mining town. They pushed for the relegated Hwange to retain their spot.

ZPC’s Executive Makes Bold Move

However, the club’s executive made a decisive choice. They inked a deal with MWOS, led by Patrick Tamson.

“Yes, we will be in the Premiership this season after successfully concluding a deal with ZPC Hwange,” said Tamson. “Though at this point in time, I cannot reveal much in terms of details.”
