CCC Activist Madzibaba VeShanduko Freed From Remand
CCC activist Madzibaba VeShanduko, real name Godfrey Karemberera has been freed from remand by a Harare Magistrate. The activist had been accused of attempting to remove the Mbuya Nehanda statue in Harare CBD.
Defaulting Police and Legal Protests
Madzibaba citied that the police have been defaulting attending the court for more than a year as the reason for his removal from remand. Allegedly, the police claimed to be too occupied with other responsibilities.
“Pamusoroi vana veZimbabwe. Nyaya iripo ndeyekuti mapurisa aasingauye kucourt. Ndofunga ndandatone gore nefour months mapurisa pese pandourira kucourt vasingauye vachidefaulter kucourt. So nyaya yavarikuisa ndekuti hanzi mapurisa arikuwandirwa nebasa,” stated Madzibaba.

Defense Team Protests Court Handling and State’s Unpreparedness
Last month, his legal representatives expressed their dissatisfaction with the handling of the case by the court. The State informed Harare Magistrate Munashe Chibanda that they were unprepared for the trial. This revelation prompted protests from the defense team.
Leading the protest, Coltart, a representative from Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR), expressed their concerns.
“The State is not ready to go to trial. It is taking this court for a ride. The accused has been on remand since March 2022. Therefore, he has been on remand since last year. What the State is doing is not fair and it not just,” stated Coltart
Arrest and Alleged Assault
Karemberera was arrested last year while wearing CCC’s distinctive yellow garments. It is also alleged that he suffered severe physical assault, targeting his legs and back, during the arrest.
