A Maputo-born truck driver has been arrested in Rusape for offloading muriate of potash (MOP) fertilizer valued at over US$5,000.

A Routine Patrol Turns Suspicious

This dramatic incident unfolded on September 22, 2024, when ZRP police were on patrol. According to reports, the police noticed a truck parked on the roadside. As they approached, they observed the driver’s colleagues fleeing the scene. This suspicious behavior heightened the police’s interest in the situation.

Investigation Unfolds

Upon reaching the truck, the police found the driver standing beside it. They asked him what was happening, but his response raised their suspicions further. The officers initiated an investigation to uncover the truth.

Upon inspecting the truck, they discovered it was carrying MOP fertilizer. Almost half of the fertilizer had already been offloaded onto the ground. The police realized that something was not right.

The Driver’s Role Revealed

During interrogation, the driver, Manhique Aurelio Joao, revealed he was merely the driver. He claimed he was not the owner of the truck or the fertilizer, leading to his arrest.

Investigators managed to recover more than 412 kg of fertilizer, valued at more than US$5,000. The police took swift action, ensuring that the stolen goods were secured.

Facing Justice

Mhangura Man Convicted for Molesting Ex-Wife in Front of Their Baby Over New Love With First Husband

The driver appeared before the Rusape Magistrates Court on charges related to trust property. After reviewing the evidence, he was found guilty. His sentencing is set to occur later today.
