Notorious Robbery Gang Behind the J and P Security Heist Arrested

Nine members of a notorious robbery gang, responsible for the US$145K J and P Security heist in 2022, were arrested and appeared in court before Magistrate Taurai Manuwere.

The suspects, Innocent Chawaguta (37), Tafadzwa Chirinda Chaute (36), Owen Mbayi (37), Promise Mussa (36), Tapiwa Chigwaze (39), Winston Matizanadzo (46), Kamuriwo Mudziwaona (39), and Farai Chauke (38), faced charges of armed robbery, totaling five counts.

High Court Bail Denied as Investigations Continue

During the court proceedings, the prosecutor, Mr. Anesu Chirenje, stated that the accused could only be granted bail by the High Court. Consequently, they were remanded in custody until May 2 to allow for the completion of investigations.

Daring Heist at J and P Security Unraveled

The gang’s criminal activities were exposed during a bold robbery at the J and P Security offices in Eastlea Harare. It took place on May 16, 2022, at midnight, and the gang entered by scaling a pre-cast wall.

As per the prosecution’s account, Hardlife Matare and Nyasha Severa, who were manning the control room, noticed the intruders on the CCTV feed. When Mr. Matare went to investigate, he was confronted by the armed gang, brandishing pistols and rifles.

The gang forcefully subdued Matare, Severa, and other staff members, restraining them and locking them in a restroom. They took the keys to the strong room, escaping with around US$142,995 in cash and six firearms. So far, only US$4,900 has been retrieved.
