Husband Who Stoned Wife to Death Sentenced to Life Imprisonment

A Murwira husband who brutally stoned his wife to death was sentenced to life imprisonment by Mutare High Court judge, Justice Isaac Muzenda.

A Brutal Crime Unleashed

Justice Muzenda, in delivering the judgment, emphasized the brutal and gruesome nature of the attack that led to the untimely death of Sonile Chatizwa. The evidence presented in court revealed the weight and nature of the weapons used by Chitsiku in his violent act.

Weapons of Destruction

According to a police report, Chitsiku used three stones, two of which had sharp edges, weighing 5.3kg, 3.9kg, and 3.7kg, respectively. Additionally, he wielded a brick weighing 4.25kg. These heavy and lethal weapons were used to mercilessly attack his wife.

Escape to Tragedy

Chatizwa sought refuge at her uncle’s homestead, approximately 4km away from her matrimonial home in Marange. Tragically, it was at her uncle’s residence where the fatal stoning occurred, marking the end of her life.

A History of Abuse

During the trial, it was revealed that Chatizwa had endured extreme abuse at the hands of her husband, whom she accused of infidelity. The ongoing quarrels and accusations of unfaithfulness plagued their relationship.

Eyewitness Accounts

Eyewitness testimonies shed light on the chilling events that unfolded on that fateful day. Mr. Mwaionei Dhaure, Chitsiku’s uncle, recounted the horrifying scene where his nephew’s wife, carrying their baby on her back, sought help from him as her husband pursued her with a brick. Another witness, Mr. Teramai Chitima, also testified, stating that he saw Chitsiku crushing his wife’s head with a boulder.

Justice Served

Chitsiku’s violent act caused Chatizwa to sustain a deep cut on the back of her head and a similar injury on her forehead. The post-mortem report confirmed that these injuries were the cause of her tragic death. As a result of the court proceedings, Chitsiku has been sentenced to life imprisonment.
