Chitungwiza Man Sentenced to 3 Years in Prison For Stealing Grocery Truck

A Zengeza 5 Chitungwiza man has been sentenced to three years in prison for stealing a grocery truck loaded from Zengeza 2 shops.

Caught on Camera: The Culprit’s Downfall

34-year-old Talent Reid was captured on CCTV footage during the audacious heist. Law enforcement authorities promptly arrested him at his home following the identification.

Guilty Plea and Sentencing

Reid appeared before Harare magistrate Clever Tsikwa, where he pleaded guilty to the theft of the motor vehicle. Initially facing a five-year jail term, Reid received a suspended sentence of two years, contingent upon good behavior.

The Heist Unfolds

On November 18, at approximately 2:30 PM, the truck’s driver, Patson Gwara, entered a retail outlet at Zengeza 2 shops, leaving the truck’s engine running. In a matter of moments, Reid seized the opportunity and drove off in the truck, leaving Gwara helpless in his pursuit.

Swift Police Action and Recovery

Gwara wasted no time in reporting the incident to the police, who immediately launched an investigation. Detectives obtained crucial CCTV footage from the supermarket, leading members of the public to identify Reid as the perpetrator.

During a search of Reid’s residence, police discovered 14 boxes of 12x2l cooking oil. Acting on the information provided by Reid, detectives were able to locate the stolen vehicle parked at Zengeza 3 shops. It was loaded with an additional 48 boxes.

Further investigation led police to Reid’s friend’s house in Zengeza 3, where seven more boxes of the stolen cooking oil were recovered.

Restitution and Recovery

Thanks to the diligent efforts of law enforcement, the stolen grocery truck and a total of 69 boxes of cooking oil, valued at US$12,370, have been successfully returned to their rightful owner.
