The Easter holiday was marked by a tragic incident that resulted in the loss of 30 lives across the country due to road accidents.
As per the Zimbabwe Republic Police, 288 road accidents occurred during the Easter weekend, claiming 30 lives and injuring 153 people between last Friday and Monday.
Among the many accidents reported, one involved a Caravan commuter omnibus colliding with a minibus on the Harare-Masvingo road, causing the death of 10 people and injuring 31 others. Another accident on the Mvuma-Gweru road involved a sprinter carrying 24 passengers colliding with a truck with 31 passengers on board, resulting in the death of six people and injuring five others.
The truck driver did not stop after the incident, and in another accident on the Harare-Masvingo road, three passengers in the truck were injured.
Last year, during the same period, 264 road accidents resulted in 73 deaths and 202 injuries, making this year’s figures even more alarming.
According to National police spokesperson Paul Nyathi, most of the fatal accidents occurred at night and were attributed to human error, such as speeding, inattention, misjudgment, and failure to observe road rules and regulations by drivers. Nyathi also noted that most of the accidents involved overloaded vehicles carrying both passengers and goods, with travelers ignoring safety measures.
