Chinese National Arrested for Killing Trespassing Artisanal Miner

A Chinese national has been arrested for killing an artisanal miner and injuring two others who allegedly trespassed into his mine. The tragic event unfolded last Sunday at the Blue Belle Mine.

Deadly Confrontation

According to the reports, the incident occurred around 3 PM on Sunday. Cai Yulong (58), the owner of the Blue Belle Mine, confronted Goni Goni (23), John Muchawaya (34), Lovemore Mapfanya (20), and Komborerai Shariwa (24) after they allegedly encroached into his mine through an underground shaft.

“Yulong confronted them when they came out of the shaft, and a misunderstanding ensued,” a police statement read.

Tragic Loss of Life

Yulong is accused of opening fire on the group, fatally shooting Goni Goni once in the right thigh. Goni died on the spot. Yulong then allegedly shot Muchawaya three times, once in the left knee and right thigh, leaving him in critical condition at Kwekwe General Hospital.

Furthermore, Yulong is said to have struck Mapfanya once in the head with an open fist. Mapfanya managed to flee the scene and reported the incident to the police, leading to Yulong’s arrest.

Legal Proceedings

Yulong has been charged with murder and appeared before Kwekwe Magistrate Cheryl Tembo. He has been remanded in custody pending further legal proceedings.

“The accused person was remanded in custody to the 14th of June 2024,” read the NPAZ press statement.

Gweru Man Fined for Assaulting Wife

In another incident, a 27-year-old man from Gweru was sentenced to pay a US$200 fine for physically abusing his wife. According to court proceedings, the accused, on May 30th, had an altercation with his wife in the middle of the night. It is alleged that the husband then started beating his wife with his fists several times all over her body.
